IN THIS SECTION: The demographic breakdown of responses, including the schools that young people go to and their ethnicity
Young people
Age
Responses from all young people who completed the consultation have been included in the results, including those that were outside the target age range of 12-16 year olds. Of this number, 81.9% were aged between 12 and 16.
Schools
The majority of responses were received from students at North Halifax Grammar School (61.1%), followed by 32.8% of the responses being received from Brighouse High School.
Location
The majority of responses were from postcode areas HD6, HX3 and HX2, followed by HX1, BD13, HX7, HX4, HX6, BD22 and BD6. This represents a spread across the borough, but there were fewer responses from the Todmorden area.
Economic Background
Young people were asked to identify their family’s circumstance. The majority (55.9%) identified ‘my family can afford everything we need and some things we want/we can afford the same things as most of my classmates’, followed by 15.3% selecting ‘my family can afford everything they need and want/more than most of my classmates’. 14.2% were unsure while 11.3% chose not to respond, with the final 3.3% selecting ‘my family struggle to afford everything we need/we can afford fewer treats than my classmates’. This contrasts to the high number of areas in the highest percentile of the index of multiple deprivation, and highlights that more needs to be done to reach these areas.
Disabilities and Learning Difficulties
6.4% of young people told us that they have a disability, with a further 4.4% who were either unsure or in the process of diagnosis. 9.1% of respondents had a learning difficulty, with a further 5% who were unsure or in the process of being diagnosed. This is lower than the January 2023 data released by Calderdale Council, where 11% of secondary school students had SEN support.
Pronouns and Sexual Orientation
48.5% of respondents used she/her pronouns, closely followed by he/him using 41.4%. 2% used they/them, with many more giving variations to these that they use.
The majority (66.6%) were heterosexual, with 4.5% at bisexual and a high number (14.8%) who declined to answer.
Ethnicity
The majority of respondents were from a White British (53.6%) or White (12.4%) ethnicity. A variety of other ethnicities were represented, with 8.8% of respondents selecting Pakistani/British and 4% selected Indian/British. In total, 77.79% were from a White ethnicity, while 9.26% were minority ethnic groups. This contrasted to the 72.9% of White and 26.4% minority ethnic students recorded by Calderdale Council in Secondary schools in January 2023. We did, however, have a higher number of responses choosing not to answer at 12.94%, in comparison to 0.6% in Calderdale Council’s data.
Adults
